Our home is unique in this area because it is family-run. My Grandad originally started the business forty years ago. He was the owner and manager, and my nana did the cooking. My parents started working at the Chestnuts, offering care, when I was 4. I started working as a carer at the Chestnuts Retirement Home 23 years ago. However, I have known the home my whole life, and as a child, I often visited to say Hi to the residents.
Throughout the last 24 years, I have worked in every aspect of the care home, from care assistant to accounts. I am now the manager and the owner. My children often visit the Chestnuts Retirement Home to say Hi to the residents and have expressed interest in continuing the family business.
Care Assistants
The Chestnuts is so successful due to the fantastic care team we have. Care assistants are some of the most valuable people in a care home. These are the people that deliver day-to-day care for your loved ones.
We have always had high staff retention and worked well as a team. We have staff members who have been with us for up to 25 years, and the deputy manager has worked with us for 20 years. The deputies and I work the care shifts along with our regular duties.
Offering care is the best way to get to know a resident and build a meaningful relationship. We can then ensure the home is being run around the resident as an individual.

Hello, my name is Bethany, and I am the owner, manager and third generation in the family business. I have grown up with the Chestnuts, and it is a second home to me and my children. My home/work life is very mixed and that’s ok because being at work feels like being at home.

I have worked at the Chestnuts for eleven years. It is a small, very friendly, family-run home. We all work together as a team, providing a very high standard of care to our residents.

Hi, I am Debbie, and I love working at the Chestnuts. I joined towards the end of the pandemic. I was retired and missing family and friends. Working here filled that space for me, and I feel I have gained a whole new family. My Mum suffers from dementia, and if she had to be in a care home, I would like it to be like this.

I’ve been at the Chestnuts for six months, I came to the Chestnuts to be close to my children’s school and to gain better knowledge, but since being here, not only have I gained the better knowledge, but I have become part of a family.

I have worked at The Chestnuts for almost 7 years. What I like about working at The Chestnuts is as it is a small home, and I feel that I can usually find time in my working day to go the extra mile and do things for the residents that I may not be able to do in a larger home. I also feel that I work well with the team I work with.

I love working at The Chestnuts because it’s giving me confidence and I feel like I’m part of a big family, it’s also close to where my son goes to school. I enjoy working with the people I work with, everyone is so kind and everyone is always willing to help each other out. I also feel like we know the residents so well and that we give them the best care possible.
